An implant is an artificial tooth root made of pure titanium. It is surgically placed in the bone of the upper or lower jaw where the roots of the natural teeth used to be. In other words, an implant is placed on the same level as the gums and cannot be seen in the mouth. Following a period during which osseointegration occurs (the implant is integrated into the bone) the artificial teeth are fixed on the implant and take the place of missing teeth.
