Dental causalgia
(burning mouth syndrome)

involves the chronic or recurring “burn-like” mouth-ache that may affect the tongue, the gums, the lips, the palate or even extended areas in the oral cavity.

What are its causes?

The main causes of dental causalgia are:

  • Psychological factors (stress, depression, etc.)
  • Dry mouth
  • Oral mucositis
  • Lack of vitamins and minerals
  • Endocrine disruptions (type 1diabetes, hypothyroidism, etc.)
  • Medicines
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Food allergies
  • Badly fitting dentures or the use  of dental materials that cause irritation

How can it be treated?

Dental causalgia is dealt with conservative treatment. Frequent consumption of water is recommended, as well as the avoidance of acidic, spicy, very warm foods and drinks, as well as products containing cinnamon, mint or alcohol. It is further recommended that stress levels are reduced and the possibility of an underlying pathological condition should be investigated in collaboration with the patient’s doctor.
